Earlier this year a local fitness studio in Durban, Pulse Ballito, hosted their own burpees challenge. The challenge included doing 500 burpees to raise money for local centers for abandoned babies. It was a massive success with 10,000 burpees completed and R30,00 raised. Inspired by the success of this initiative and motivated to make a difference. Dina Crichton, owner of Pulse Ballito, set out to take the Burpees4Babies challenge national. In a quest to help more local baby centers across the country.
Let’s take a look at the statistics for South Africa, because child abandonment is largely unreported. Did you know that there are an estimated 3.7 million orphans in South Africa. With close to half of them having lost their parents to AIDS-related diseases. Every year 3,500 children are abandoned, that’s approximately 300 per month. With research showing that 65% of abandoned children are newborns, and 90% are under the age of one. These stats are shocking.
This is the future of our country and more needs to be done as a community to help ensure these babies grow up in safe and secure environments.
