According to research by the World Health Organisation (WHO) urban air pollution has been linked to almost 2 million premature deaths world-wide each year. South Africa was ranked 30th in the world for bad air quality with Johannesburg being the worst polluted city.
Have a look at South Africa’s air pollution stats:
Flowers and plants are incredibly powerful little organisms. We may not be able to prevent country-wide pollution due to lack of regulations in our country. But we as individuals can each make a difference within our own homes.
Almost a year ago to the day I made a choice to walk away from the corporate rat race and start up my own florist, Lush Occasions. Having being immersed in this world I realise plants and flowers have a lot more to offer than just decorating a home or event. I love the idea of naturally purifying the air in my home. I do not believe humidifiers are the best for cleansing the air and this is for the simple fact that if you don’t clean a humidifier daily and weekly they disperse bacteria throughout your home which is more dangerous to your kids than un-purified air.
Here is a list of indoor plants that can naturally cleanse the air AND decorate your home;
1. Dendrobium Orchid
2. Phalaenopsis Orchid
3. Peace Lily
5. Bamboo Palm
6. Heart Leaf Philodendron
7. Sword Fern
8. Spider Plant
9. Golden Pothos
10. Snake plant
11. Philodendron Selloum
12. Weeping fig
13. Aloe Vera
All of these plants are easy to find at your local nursery and all apart from the orchids are easy to care for.
